RuneScape Classic has finally shut down

At aproximately 8pm AEST Monday night, RuneScape Classic was laid to rest and with it goes some incredible memories.

Released in 2001, RuneScape Classic or 'RuneScape' as it was originally known as until 2004, is credited as many peoples first online gaming experience and the spark that for some ignited a love for MMORPG'S.

On May 23rd in a blog on their website, game developer Jagex announced that "The RuneScape Classic servers will be taken offline at 8:00am BST on the 6th of August 2018. After such date, it will no longer be possible to log in to the Classic game." Later in the blog they stated that the reason for this is because "The truth is that bots and lack of community safety tools are serious problems, however, we also feel that we can no longer offer long term service reliability due to the growing risk of unrecoverable game breaking bugs."

Although many people hadn't played this game in years and some may have moved on to the newer RuneScape, it will always hold a special place in the hearts of many gamers.

On a lighter note, one redditor pointed out that at least the person that hacked their account can't play on it now either.

It also wouldn't be surprising if there are already people out there working on a clone of the game so that people can enjoy the nostalgia once more.

But for now, farewell RuneScape Classic.. You will be missed. Perhaps in the future we might meet once more in Lumbridge.
